Code of Ethics
Professional Standards & Code of Ethics Resources
The REALTOR® Code of Ethics represents the commitment REALTORS® make to honesty, integrity, professionalism, and service to the public. First adopted in 1913, the Code continues to evolve, reinforcing the high ethical standards that distinguish REALTORS® from other real estate licensees.
The Code of Ethics is central to maintaining consumer trust and ensuring fair, ethical conduct in real estate transactions.

Ethics Complaints
The Code of Ethics is what separates REALTORS® from other real estate licensees, and DCAR takes enforcement of the Code seriously.
Ethics complaints may be filed by REALTORS® or members of the public. These complaints serve both an educational purpose and, when necessary, a disciplinary function when violations of the Code have occurred.
Any individual who has reason to believe that a REALTOR® has engaged in unethical conduct may file a written ethics complaint with the local Association of REALTORS® where the REALTOR® holds membership.
All ethics complaints are processed through DCAR’s Professional Standards system, which is designed to ensure fairness, confidentiality, and due process for all parties involved.

Informal Resolution Options
Before filing a formal ethics complaint, you may also consider faster, voluntary dispute resolution options, such as:
-
Ombudsman Program
-
Mediation
These options are designed to help parties resolve concerns through communication and understanding without entering the formal complaint process.
Contact DCAR at 845-471-2811 to discuss whether Ombudsman or Mediation services may be appropriate for your situation.
Please note: Participation in Ombudsman or Mediation services is not required prior to filing a formal ethics complaint. A complainant may proceed directly with a formal ethics complaint at their discretion.
